Ceiling Fans & Penetrations

Overview

Ceiling Fans & Penetrations (collectively referred to as Zone Items below) represent Fixtures added to Ceilings within Zones.

Zone Items can be created using the Ceiling Fan & Penetrations Drawing Mode and can be Auto-Created (see below) on Zone Creation depending on Hero Settings.

Ceiling Fans

Ceiling Fans are modelled in a Hero Project to represent the air-flow cooling benefits that these devices provide to Dwellings.

The Electricity Usage of the Ceiling Fan (by default 60W) is added to the Cooling Energy of the Simulation when deriving the Star Rating result.

The Cooling benefit is simulated by adding a Ceiling Fan temperature benefit value to the Cooling thermostat setting (i.e. an additional threshold before the Cooling is turned on within the Zone in the Simulation)

Penetrations

Penetrations are modelled in a Hero Project to represent their two potential impacts on the Simulation:

  • Air Leakage due to the Penetration: As determined by the Penetration’s Type & “Sealed” property

  • Loss of Ceiling Insulation due to the Penetration: As determined by the Penetration’s Dimensions & Clearance.

There are variety of Types of Penetrations available within Hero and they have various Air-Leakage values depending on their Sealed property:

Penetration Type

Sealed Air-Leakage Rate (m3/hr.fitting)

Unsealed Air-Leakage Rate (m3/hr.fitting)

Recessed Downlight

0 m3/hr

3.6 m3/hr

Exhaust Fans: I.e. Kitchen Rangehoods & Bathroom Exhaust Fans

4.0 m3/hr

20.2 m3/hr

Chimney

19.2 m3/hr

320.8 m3/hr

Other: For Other Ceiling Penetrations

0 m3/hr

10 m3/hr

Auto-Create Penetrations

Hero has a setting which allows Penetrations to be automatically added to Zones upon Zone Creation. This Setting can toggled within the Settings view.

Zone Items within the Visual-View

Selecting

You can Select a Ceiling Fan or Penetration within the Visual View. Penetrations can also be selected within the Data-Grid and this will be reflected within the Visual View.

Ceiling Fans & Penetrations also share the common context-menu actions of Select Parent (which will select the Parent Zone of the Zone Item) which can also be called by :three_button_mouse: Double Left-Clicking the Zone Item.

Deleting

Zone-Items can be deleted by:

  • selecting the Zone Item within the Visual-View or Data-Grid and pressing ⌨ Delete; or

  • by using the :three_button_mouse: Right-Click Context-menu Delete action within the Visual View;

  • by typing “0” within the Number Column of the Zone Data-Grid

Moving

Zone Items can be moved in the Visual View by selecting them and then :three_button_mouse: Dragging them into their position.

Zone Items cannot move outside of the Zone

You can move a Zone Item in a straight :three_button_mouse: or :three_button_mouse: direction by holding ⌨ Shift.

Zone Item Autoshift

Zone Items will automatically shift to remain with the Zone when Walls or Wall Points are moved within the Visual View. If there are no locations where the Zone Item can move to successfully, then the Wall move or Point move will be blocked.

Penetration Groups

Penetrations get grouped into Penetration Groups within the Zone Data-Grid when they share identical properties such as Width, Length, Parent Ceiling, etc. This is to allow better bulk editing & visual clarity.

You can edit an individual Penetration within a Penetration Group within the Data-Grid by expanding the Group Header and changing the Individual Penetration’s property. This will then move the Penetration to a new Group.
